Everything You Need To Know

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) Master's captain's license authorizes the holder to operate both inspected and uninspected vessels. Inspected vessels are those certified by the USCG to carry more than six paying passengers plus crew. Examples include ferry boats, harbor tour boats, and whale-watching boats.
Individuals who wish to operate inspected vessels that carry more than six passengers, such as charter boats, tour boats, or ferries in United States waters, must obtain a 25/50/100-Ton Master's captain's license.
An inspected passenger vessel is a boat or ship that is required to comply with specific safety regulations set by the U.S. Coast Guard. These regulations cover construction standards, safety equipment, crew training, and operational guidelines. The vessel undergoes regular inspections to ensure adherence to these standards. The vessel will have a Certificate of Inspection (COI) onboard, which specifies the maximum number of paying passengers allowed and indicates the type of Master’s license required for operation.
An uninspected vessel has less stringent requirements and typically carries six or fewer passengers for hire. In contrast, inspected vessels can carry more than six paying passengers and must adhere to strict construction, safety, equipment, and manning regulations.
There are various versions of the Master's license. The USCG Master licenses available include the Master's Inland (authorizes operation on inland waters), the Master's Near Coastal (permits operation on inland waters and up to 200 miles offshore), and the Master's Near Coastal with Great Lakes (allows operation on inland waterways, the Great Lakes, and up to 200 miles offshore). The tonnage categories - 25, 50, or 100 tons - correspond to the maximum size of inspected vessels you can professionally operate; you will be restricted to 100 gross tons for uninspected vessels.
To qualify, you must have adequate documented sea service time on vessels of appropriate tonnage, be at least 19 years old, and have U.S. citizenship. Additionally, you need a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), successful completion of a USCG-approved Master-level course and proctored exam, and a physical examination and drug test. You must also hold a valid CPR and First Aid certification and pay the application fees to the Coast Guard.
No, you are not required to progress sequentially through the tonnage categories. Based on your documented sea service experience on appropriately sized vessels, you may qualify directly for a 50- or 100-ton license.
Sea service can be documented using official logs, letters from vessel owners or operators, or sea service forms that detail the capacity in which you served, the vessel(s) size, and the time spent on board.
Yes, the USCG accepts military sea service, but you need to provide appropriate military documentation that certifies your role and time spent on vessels.
Yes, under certain conditions, the time spent serving on foreign-flagged vessels may count. However, the NMC reviews these on a case-by-case basis. You must provide valid documentation of your service.
The license is valid for five years. To renew it, you must demonstrate recent sea service or pass a Coast Guard-approved written requirement in lieu, undergo a physical examination, remain drug-free, and pay an application fee.

"Used this course to pass the OUPV exam. Material was presented well with a logical flow that was conducive to learning. I had little experience with a lot of the exam topics so the combination of audio and visual course materials really helped."

Mariners Learning System deserves a

"Mariners Learning System deserves a full five stars. I recently used their courses to study for and pass both my OUPV and Masters USCG captain’s license exams, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. The lessons were clear, well-structured, and easy to follow, even when covering complex material. Their practice exams and flash cards were especially helpful and gave me the confidence I needed going into the final exams. Because of Mariners Learning System, I’m now ready to submit my application and launch my charter business. If you’re looking for a reliable, effective way to prepare for your captain’s license, I highly recommend MLS."

Q&A

I have my OUPV/Six-Pack issued by the USCG recently (thanks to your program) so they have all my medical, time on water, TWIC, etc. credentials. If I take the upgrade course and get my certificate for a Master Captain, what needs to be submitted to the USCG? Also, all my experience is on boats 5 tons or less. Does that qualify for a Master Capt? Thanks!
Congratulations on the OUPV license! To upgrade, you will need to fill out CG-719B again, pay an application fee, meet the written requirement (which our course/final handles), and submit more boating experience on CG-719S (if needed). You can contact the Coast Guard to inquire about the physical, drug test, and CPR/First Aid based on when you originally submitted. If you met the boating experience for the OUPV, and meet the Master's requirements, then at minimum you will qualify for a 25-Ton Master's.
how long it takes if i take upgrading course from 6 Pack to 100gt
Our OUPV Upgrade to Master's course is designed to be a 24-hour course, however, because our courses are self-paced, the average student takes around 10-15 hours to complete.
Looking to upgrade my 6-Pack to Master's and curious about days on water requirements to do so and the differences between tonnage in licenses.  I’m an offshore charter captain in Florida and have at least 150-200 days in the water each year.  I have had my 6-Pack for over a year and a half, so have over 150-200 days on the water since my documented 360 days for my six Pack.  My main vessels are 32-34ft center consoles.  Will I just need to take the Master's section of the testing to obtain?
If you already have an OUPV/Six-Pack license and are looking to raise your grade to a Master license, you can complete our OUPV Upgrade to 25/50/100 Ton Master online course/exam and submit it to the Coast Guard.
How long does the course take on average
Our OUPV Upgrade to Master's course is designed to be a 24-hour course, however, because our courses are self-paced, the average student takes around 10-15 hours to complete.
I have my OUPV diploma from MLS, what's covered in the master curriculum that's in addition to the OUPV course?
The OUPV course focuses on teaching you the rules and regulations. In comparison, the Upgrade to Master's course teaches you how to look those rules/regulations up, along with material on safety at sea and fire fighting.
