Tips for a Smooth Deck License Renewal Application Process

Which forms do I need to submit for my Deck License Renewal?

Renewing your Deck License can be a seamless process if you gather all the necessary forms and meet the Coast Guard's requirements.

Below is a detailed guide to help you through the application process:

  • Complete the Merchant Mariner Credential (Form CG-719B
  • Submit a copy of your Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC Card)
    • It does not need to be valid unless the type of work you are doing requires it to be
    • You can submit a copy of an expired TWIC or TWIC exemption memo
  • Pass a physical examination (Form CG-719K)
  • Pass a DOT drug test (Form CG-719P)
    • You’ll need to provide proof of a passed Department of Transportation (DOT) drug test unless you are already enrolled in a DOT-approved random drug testing program
    • If you’re enrolled in such a program, you can submit documentation verifying your participation instead of undergoing a new test
  • Submit 360 days of boating experience within the last 5 years on CG-719S or completion of the Mariners Learning System's Deck License Renewal instead of boating experience
  • Pay the application fee
    • All renewal fees must be paid through Pay.gov
    • Be sure to save and submit a copy of your payment receipt with your application packet as proof of payment

Although not strictly required, maintaining a current CPR/First Aid certification is essential if you plan to work under your license. While the Coast Guard does not require you to submit proof of this certification as part of the renewal application, it’s mandatory to have it in place when actively operating professionally.

If you are working as a captain professionally, you must also be enrolled in a random drug testing program to comply with federal regulations. This ensures that your operations remain in line with safety standards.

Finally, we recommend including a copy of your current credentials in your renewal packet. This step can expedite the review process by making it easier for the Coast Guard to cross-reference your existing records.

By preparing these documents in advance and double-checking your submission for accuracy, you can ensure a smooth and hassle-free license renewal experience.
