Everything You Need To Know

An Auxiliary Sailing Endorsement is a certification that allows the holder of a Master's Inland, Mate Near Coastal, or Master Near Coastal license to operate inspected sail or auxiliary sail vessels. This endorsement ensures that the captain has the necessary experience and knowledge to safely navigate sailing vessels.
This endorsement is necessary for individuals who wish to captain sail or auxiliary sailing vessels in a professional capacity, especially where the vessel is inspected and carries passengers for hire.
Requirements vary slightly depending on your current license. For Master Inland or Mate Near Coastal license holders, you must document at least 180 days of experience on a sail or auxiliary sailing vessel. For Master Near Coastal license holders, you need to document at least 360 days of experience on a sailing or auxiliary sailing vessel. Additionally, you must successfully complete a USCG-approved Auxiliary Sailing course and pass a written examination focused on auxiliary sailing provided at the conclusion of the course.
Document your sailing experience through official logs, letters from the vessel owner or operator, or other verifiable documents that detail your time spent aboard sailing vessels, the capacity in which you served, and the vessel's particulars.
The examination covers a range of topics relevant to auxiliary sailing, including but not limited to safety procedures, sailing terminology, navigation rules specific to sailing vessels, and sail handling.
After successfully completing the course and passing the exam, you will receive a certificate. You must submit this certificate along with the appropriate application forms, documented sailing experience, and any required fees to the National Maritime Center (NMC) to have the Auxiliary Sailing Endorsement added to your existing license.
The Auxiliary Sailing Endorsement is valid for the same duration as your primary mariner's license, which is typically five years. Renewal procedures for the endorsement align with those for renewing your main license.
The required sailing experience can be cumulative, not necessarily consecutive, as long as the total days meet the requirement for the endorsement being sought.
The experience must be gained on sail or auxiliary sail vessels. The intention is to ensure the applicant has hands-on experience with the complexities and challenges of operating sailing vessels.
Operating a sailing vessel for hire without the proper endorsement can result in penalties, including fines and possible suspension or revocation of your mariner credentials.

Good class

"Taking ASA 101 would be a good pairing. For this endorsement, I only wished the course had a larger question bank and longer tests."

Sailing Endorsement

"I got my Captain's License through Mariners Learning last year and decided to add the Sailing Endorsement. I was used to the MLS process, so this one wasn't difficult. The material is clear (having sailed for over 50 years, most of the info was known). When I took the final exam, I was expecting just the covered material, but there were some questions from the Captain's License included. Recco - before you take the final, review the Captain's License material!"

Q&A

So I took your OV six Pack course a couple years back it was fantastic, passed online, never went to Coast Guard to complete the process.  Now I would like to take the sail course just for acquiring the knowledge without the intention of getting the requisite Coast Guard endorsement/reaching the required hours.  Can I just take the sail course ?
Yes! You can just take the course for it's educational benefit. Our Sailing endorsement course is designed to be a 4-hour course, however, because our courses are self-paced, the average student takes a couple of hours to complete the Sailing Endorsement online course.
Approximately how many hours to complete Master's upgrade course? How many hours to complete auxiliary sail course? How many hours to complete assistance tow course?
Our OUPV Upgrade to Master's course is designed to be a 24-hour course, however, because our courses are self-paced, the average student takes around 10-15 hours to complete. Our Sailing endorsement course is designed to be a 4-hour course, however, because our courses are self-paced, the average student takes a couple of hours to complete the Sailing Endorsement online course. Our Towing endorsement course is designed to be a 4-hour course, however, because our courses are self-paced, the average student takes a couple of hours to complete the Towing Endorsement online course.
Are pencils and blank sheets of paper allowed during testing? If shown to camera before starting, proof that it is in-fact blank?
If a student feels they need a piece of scrap paper for the exam, you may use it. However, you must show that it is blank both front and back before testing and rip it up into tiny pieces on camera before closing the exam. Failure to do so will result in a disqualified exam attempt.
I'm looking for a course that will let me rent/charter sailboats.

do I have to send my license back to the coast guard to get my sailing endorsment?
When submitting a Sailing Endorsement certificate to the Coast Guard, you will need to: Fill out the application form CG-719B Pay the application fee on Pay.gov Submit your MLS certificate Completed form CG-719S (Boating Experience) And pay the application fee on Pay.gov. We also recommend adding a copy of your current license to the Packet (more accessible for the Coast Guard).
