On the busy waters of South Florida, where countless boats navigate between marinas, beaches, and the Intracoastal, Captain Nick Morot has a mission.

Many of his peers who pursue a captain’s license dream of running charters or delivering yachts, but Nick developed a passion for filling a different role: making the waterways safer for everyone.

Today, Nick runs Miami Boating Lessons, a hands-on training program focused on teaching boaters how to operate their vessels safely and confidently in South Florida. His journey from avid recreational boater to licensed captain and safety instructor offers valuable insights for anyone considering their own path to certification.

A Lifetime on the Water

Nick’s relationship with boating started young.

“I’ve always been an avid boater, since I was a young boy,” he shares. “I started taking my dad’s boat out as a teenager.”

Growing up in South Florida, Nick spent his high school years taking friends out on the water. What began as weekend fun evolved into something more. He found himself teaching friends and family about boating: how to handle different conditions, navigate safely, and operate their vessels with confidence.

“A lot of friends ended up buying boats, and I’d help them along the way, giving them advice on how to operate them,” Nick recalls. “And that kind of got me thinking, I really need to do something with this knowledge.”

The Decision to Get Licensed

The turning point came when Nick recognized that boating had become more than just a hobby; it was a calling.

“I did have a couple of friends that obtained their license, and they were running a charter business,” he says. “I decided to look into that.”

But as Nick researched the charter industry, he realized it wasn’t the right fit for him. Instead, he identified a different need in his area.

“We have a huge boating community in South Florida, and we feel like there’s a lot of safety issues,” he explains. “There’s just way too many accidents and incidents on the water, so I wanted to find a way that I could help the community and help build a safer boating community in South Florida.”

That vision became the catalyst for pursuing his captain’s license.

Captain’s License Programs: Finding the Right Fit

With a full-time job and two young kids, Nick needed a flexible path to his captain’s license.

“I did a lot of research,” Nick says. “I found a couple of different sea schools where I’d have to go in person. That was not an option for me.”

While looking into online schools, Nick found Mariners Learning System. The program’s reputation and structure immediately stood out.

“The flexibility, the way the course content was laid out, it just felt like a natural, easy way to learn,” Nick explains. “They also had a great reputation. I saw a lot of reviews online about the product, and it just made sense for me.”

The Learning Experience With Mariners

Mariners’ self-paced, online format proved perfect for Nick’s busy schedule.

“You would go in different modules. You could easily learn this particular section, and then once you aced that, you’d move on to the next one,” he shares. “It was something you could always click back into and do at your own time and your own pace. That was very useful for me.”

This flexibility was crucial for someone juggling work, family, and education simultaneously. Nick could study late at night after the kids went to bed, or squeeze in a lesson during lunch breaks when that worked with his schedule.

The modular structure also helped him master each concept before moving forward, building a solid foundation of knowledge step by step.

The Biggest Challenge in Getting His Captain’s License

Nick’s biggest hurdle in his captain’s license journey didn’t come from accruing his sea time or mastering the coursework.

“I was able to get my certificate with MLS pretty quickly,” he says. “The biggest struggle I had was actually submitting all my documentation to the U.S. Coast Guard to get my license.”

Nick handled all the paperwork himself, navigating the Coast Guard’s requirements without assistance. It was only later that he realized Mariners partners with MM-SEAS to offer their students help with this exact challenge.

“I think it’s a great offering for a first timer that’s going to get their license,” he shares.

Building His Business: Miami Boating Lessons

After earning his captain’s license, Nick launched Miami Boating Lessons with a clear purpose.

“I decided to pursue a business model to help make boating safer in South Florida, because we do have quite a few safety incidents,” he shares.

Nick had seen the gap in boater safety education. “When you buy a car, you can go to Driver’s Ed,” he explains. “But there’s not really a full service like that on the water.”

Nick’s business fills that gap by offering hands-on training on customers’ own boats. This approach allows boat owners to learn how their specific vessel operates while mastering crucial elements like the Rules of the Road, onboard safety, and safe navigation practices.

“Most people can buy a boat if they have a driver’s license and that’s it,” Nick points out. “There are some state mandates to get a safety identification card, but that’s not enough. You need true hands-on training, and that’s where I decided to focus and build my business.”

Nick’s training emphasizes real-world scenarios, teaching boaters how to avoid running aground, how to navigate busy waterways safely, and how to handle their vessels with confidence in South Florida’s unique conditions.

What Lessons He Applies Most Often

The knowledge Nick gained through Mariners Learning System directly informs his teaching approach.

“I apply safety first as an aspect that I learned from MLS,” he says. “There was a lot of focus on safety: CPR training, firefighting, Rules of the Road, navigation, how to be safe on the water without any issues.”

These fundamentals form the core of what Nick teaches his students. From proper navigation techniques to emergency preparedness, he applies the comprehensive training he received to help others become more competent, confident boaters.

Advice for Aspiring Captains

For anyone hesitating about pursuing their captain’s license, Nick’s message is clear.

“I think if you’re looking to pursue your captain’s license, whether you have the sea time or not, it’s a great thing to do,” he encourages.

The education extends far beyond what’s needed to pass the exam. It fundamentally changes how you see and interact with the water. Despite growing up on boats, Nick admits he learned a lot.

“I thought I knew everything,” he confesses. “Just going through that process with Mariners Learning System helped me realize there’s a lot out there that I can still learn, and I apply that every single day in my career.”
