Besides the ability to read English, there are no prerequisites for our course or exam. A common misconception is that you must complete all boating experience and application forms before taking a USCG-approved course and exam, but that’s not the case.
You have 12 months to complete our course and successfully pass the exam. Once you pass, you have another year to submit your completed application packet to the United States Coast Guard (USCG).
For the best experience, we recommend using Google Chrome. Learn more about our system requirements here.
After completing our course, you can take your exam online from the comfort of your home. To ensure a smooth testing process, you'll need a laptop or desktop with a webcam, a working microphone, and a strong Internet connection.
Our exams are a closed book, meaning you must rely on what you've learned - no notes or study materials are allowed. However, our online course is designed to teach you what you need, not just to pass the exam but to become a safer and more knowledgeable boater. Through engaging lessons, practice quizzes, and other learning tools, you'll build the confidence and skills necessary for both the test and life on the water.
We recommend completing most, if not all, of your required boating experience before starting the course, though it’s not mandatory. Just keep in mind that you must have all your documented experience ready by the time you submit your application to the Coast Guard. You can get experience by:
While passing the course and exam is essential, the Coast Guard will not issue your license unless ALL requirements are met. Be sure to review our article, Captain’s License Requirements: Your Ultimate Checklist, to ensure you’re prepared.
