This article will walk you through the key steps to ensure a trouble-free experience when using the LockDown Browser, as well as answer common questions about how it works.
Before launching your exam, confirm the following:
You must use an up-to-date laptop or desktop computer
Mobile devices are NOT supported, including:
Phones
Tablets (iPad, Android tablets)
Chromebooks
The LockDown Browser may not work on:
Public Wi-Fi
Work or school networks
Coffee shop or shared internet connections
A private, stable home internet connection helps reduce troubles.
Confirm both are enabled and functioning
Ensure you have adequate lighting so your camera can clearly capture your face
Use an up-to-date version of one of the following:
Google Chrome (recommended)
Firefox
Safari
Other browsers - such as Edge, Internet Explorer, or Opera - often cause compatibility issues.
Programs and extensions such as:
Screen recorders
Streaming services
Video conferencing apps
…must be completely closed before launching the LockDown Browser.

Open your exam activity
Click “Check your LockDown Browser Setup”
Follow the on-screen prompts
After confirming your system is ready, click “Launch LockDown Browser”
This helps prevent issues before they occur.

Yes. For each exam or module that requires the LockDown Browser:
Click “Launch LockDown Browser” to start
Complete and submit your quiz
Close the browser completely
If your exam has multiple modules, you must launch, submit, and close the LockDown Browser for each module, including the Sample Test.
The LockDown Browser is secure testing software that allows students to take required Mariners Learning System exams without an in-person proctor, giving you the flexibility to complete exams anytime.
When you activated your course, you acknowledged that you have:
An up-to-date laptop or desktop
A working camera & microphone
A strong, stable internet connection
The ability to download and run testing software
These requirements are mandatory for all recorded online courses and testing.
Refunds cannot be issued if your equipment or internet does not meet the required specifications, as these requirements are clearly stated before purchase and during activation.
