On March 1, 2024, the United States Coast Guard began issuing the Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMCs) in a new format; replacing the existing passport-style red book and endorsement labels.
The new MMCs differ from the legacy passport style. To get a visual, refer to the provided example:
On March 1, 2024, the new credentials were issued for all approved applications, including credential endorsements.
Follow these essential steps to ensure the validity and security of your credentials:
The MMCs can be displayed either flat or folded. Folding is optional; not required.
If you choose to fold, follow the provided guidelines:
Legacy credentials remain valid until the indicated expiration date.
Use the MMLD Credential Verification tool on uscg.mil to confirm the validity of your credential.
Endorsements will no longer be provided as separate labels (ex., stickers); instead, a new MMC document inclusive of endorsements will be issued.
The new MMCs are formatted on 8.5" by 11" waterproof and tear-resistant synthetic paper.
The updated credentials boast several security features, including micro-printing, foiling, and intricate patterns.
The National Maritime Center will use your photo from the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card for your MMC.

You can verify the validity of a United States Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) and Medical Certificate using the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential Verification tool. This tool is designed for Port State Control Officers, employers, and others who need to confirm credential status. It displays only the most recently issued valid MMC and Medical Certificate, with data updated daily at 0700.
Medical Certificates display both the issue and expiration dates for service. Mariners must hold a valid Medical Certificate to sail under the authority of their MMC. All credentialed U.S. Mariners are required to carry both their MMC and Medical Certificate when sailing.
To verify credentials, you will need to enter the document number, credential type, reference number, and the mariner’s last name. Employers are strongly advised to visually inspect original credentials in addition to using the verification tool to confirm authenticity.
If you have any questions or concerns about the verification results, contact the National Maritime Center.
