The National Maritime Center (NMC) handles all captain’s license applications for the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). You can reach them by phone at (888) 427-5662 or through live chat on their website. Phone and email hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. ET.
If you’re in the middle of a captain’s license application, you don’t call “the Coast Guard” in general. You contact the National Maritime Center, the specific division of the USCG that issues Merchant Mariner Credentials (MMCs). Knowing the right information can save you hours of frustration.
Here’s everything you need to get through.
The NMC offers two ways to reach its Customer Service Center (CSC). The fastest method for most questions is live chat on the NMC website; a phone call works for more complex application issues.

For the most current contact information, check the NMC’s official contact page. If you’re working through your application requirements, having these contact details handy before you need them is a good habit.
If your question is specifically about the medical review of your CG-719K form or a medical disqualifier, the NMC’s medical team handles those inquiries. You can reach them through the same main number, (888) 427-5662, and ask to be connected to the medical evaluation division.

The NMC’s Customer Service Center handles calls from thousands of mariners across the country. Wait times can run long, especially during peak hours.
Calling early in the morning gives you a much better shot at shorter hold times; midday is typically the busiest window.
Start with live chat. The NMC’s live chat connects you to a support representative and is often faster than the phone queue. A built-in chatbot is available around the clock for basic questions even outside business hours.
Check your application status online first. Before calling about where your application stands, use the NMC’s Application Status tool. It’s often the fastest way to see your current position in the review process without waiting for a representative.
Have your reference number ready. If you call or email, include your mariner reference number, full name, and a clear description of what you need. This cuts the back-and-forth and speeds up the response.
Understanding the typical timeline for the licensing process can also help you set realistic expectations for NMC response times.
The NMC website has self-service tools that can answer many questions without contacting a representative at all. Two of the most useful are Application Status and Credential Verification, both of which are available online around the clock.
Application Status. Enter your reference number to see exactly where your packet is in the review process. This is the tool to use before calling to ask, “Where’s my application?”
Credential Verification. If you need to confirm whether a specific Merchant Mariner Credential is valid (yours or someone else’s), the NMC’s Credential Verification tool returns results instantly.
NMC Checklists. The NMC publishes detailed application checklists for every credential type on the NMC Checklist page. Before you contact them about a requirement, check whether the answer is already on the checklist for your specific license type.
Not every question needs to go to the Coast Guard. For questions about your MLS course, exam, or Certificate of Completion, contact Mariners Learning System directly at (609) 303-0664. For questions about your application status, medical review, or credential issuance, the NMC is your point of contact.

No. The NMC releases application status information only to the individual applicant. You’ll need to check your own status using the tools above or by calling the NMC directly.

The licensing process runs smoother when you know who to call before a problem comes up. Save the NMC number, bookmark the status checker, and keep your mariner reference number somewhere accessible. Most delays happen because applicants don’t know who to contact or wait too long to ask a question.
If you have questions about any part of the captain’s license process, from course selection to application submission, the team at Mariners Learning System is here to help.
