What is the Marine Radio Operator Permit (MROP)?  

MPs are required to operate radiotelephone stations aboard certain vessels that sail the Great Lakes. They are also required to operate radiotelephone stations aboard vessels of more than 300 gross tons and vessels that carry more than six passengers for hire in the open sea or any tidewater area of the United States. They are also required to operate certain aviation radiotelephone stations and certain coast radiotelephone stations.

MROP stands for Marine Radio Operator Permit, and the MP is the operator class code abbreviation used by the FCC for this permit. The MP code is used to refer to the Marine Radio Operator Permit in the FCC's official documentation.

 

Which element exam must I pass for the Mariner Radio Operator Permit?  

To obtain the Marine Radio Operator Permit (MROP), you must pass Element 1, which is the written exam that covers the requirements for the permit. This exam is necessary to meet the written portion of the MROP.

  • Be a legal resident of (or otherwise eligible for employment in) the United States 
  • Be able to receive and transmit spoken messages in English
