When it comes to pursuing a career in the maritime industry, having the right qualifications is essential. One crucial aspect of this is obtaining a USCG captain's license, also known as a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), if you plan on having paying passengers aboard. These licenses come in several types, each granting different privileges and qualifications. In this article, we will explore the main types of USCG captain's licenses and what they entail.
The Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) license, commonly known as the "Six-Pack" license, allows the holder to operate uninspected vessels carrying up to six passengers for hire. This includes both power and sail vessels up to 100 gross tons, providing the opportunity to captain charter boats, fishing trips, and other passenger services without the need for detailed vessel inspections by the U.S. Coast Guard. It's a popular license for those starting a maritime career, offering flexibility in a variety of commercial boating activities.

The Master's license grants the holder all the privileges of the OUPV (Six-Pack) license, allowing them to operate uninspected vessels carrying up to six passengers for hire. Additionally, it enables the operation of inspected vessels up to 25, 50, or 100 Gross Registered Tons (GRT), depending on the specific endorsement. This license is ideal for those looking to operate larger commercial vessels.
While there are Master licenses available for 200 GRT and above, we do not offer training or certification for those higher-level licenses.

The Mate license is a step below the Master license, allowing individuals to serve as mates or second-in-command on vessels. Like the Master license, it is categorized based on tonnage and passenger capacity. While we do not offer training or certification for Mate licenses, we recommend contacting the National Maritime Center for more information on these credentials and requirements.
A USCG Assistance Towing Endorsement is for individuals operating towing vessels in commercial towing operations. This certification confirms the license holder’s compliance with USCG standards and demonstrates proficiency in the necessary skills and knowledge for safe and efficient towing. The endorsement can be added to both the OUPV and Master’s licenses, enhancing the holder’s qualifications for towing operations.
⚠ WARNING: For those seeking a full cargo or tugboat license, contact the National Maritime Center for more information. The Assistance Towing Endorsement is for passenger vessels only.
The Auxiliary Sailing Endorsement is an add-on to the Master license, enabling the holder to operate inspected sailing vessels commercially, carrying seven or more passengers.
⚠ WARNING: This endorsement cannot be attached to the OUPV license.
The specific requirements for each USCG captain's license may vary, but all candidates must meet common prerequisites, including age requirements, sea service experience, completion of necessary training, passing the USCG examination, and meeting medical and physical fitness standards. When choosing the right license, it's essential to consider your career goals and the type of operations you plan to pursue. Reviewing the USCG regulations and consulting with trusted maritime training institutions, such as us, will ensure you meet the requirements for your desired license type.
Obtaining the appropriate USCG captain's license is a significant milestone in a mariner's career. It ensures that you are qualified to operate vessels safely and professionally within your designated capacity. Whether your goal is to carry passengers, engage in commercial fishing, or pursue other maritime opportunities, the correct license is crucial for a successful, compliant career in the maritime industry.
