Minimum Requirements for OUPV/Six-Pack License: TWIC Card, Age, Physical Exam, Drug Test, Etc.

What are the OUPV/Six-Pack captain's license requirements?  

The minimum requirements for getting an OUPV/Six-Pack captain's license are: 

  • At least 18 years old when submitting your application packet
  • Either legal to work in the U.S. or a U.S. citizen 
  • Obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC Card)  
  • Pass a physical examination  
  • Pass a DOT drug test
    • Unless enrolled in a USCG-approved random drug testing program for the last 180 days and with no failure or refusal to participate in a chemical test for dangerous drugs
  • Adult CPR/Basic First Aid training  
  • Minimum of 360 days of boating experience, with ninety of these days occurring in the last three years for "recency"
  • Complete a USCG Original License Application Package  

Finally, pass a USCG-approved OUPV/Six-Pack course like the one we offer. 

 

What sea service time is required for an OUPV/Six-Pack license?  

To qualify, you must have at least 360 days of sea time since age 16, with 90 of those days occurring within the past three years for recency.

  • For a Near Coastal endorsement, 90 of the 360 days must be seaward of the boundary line
  • For a Great Lakes endorsement, 90 of the 360 days must be on the Great Lakes

 

Do I need to be a U.S. citizen to obtain my Six-Pack license?  

You do not need to be a U.S. citizen to obtain your Six-Pack license. However, you need to be legal to work in the U.S.
